Five-axis machining specialist Turbocam Europe Ltd, has complemented its impeller machining capabilities with an 850mm diameter capacity vertical turret lathe.
This allows the company to add turning operations before and after five-axis milling of components up to 750mm in diameter.
Turbocam is an international company with operations in the USA, India and Romania as well as it Fareham, Hants. In the UK Turbocam operates 18 full five-axis machining centres primarily producing impellers for a wide range of industries and applications in materials that include steel, aluminium and titanium. The company has experience in high volume, low batch development and prototype production, and also makes blades for steam and gas turbines.
End-users come from industries including power generation, automotive and aerospace. A typical year's production might involve the manufacture of 20,000 impellers to 200 unique designs.
One area the company has developed in recent times is the machining of complete impellers from solid.
Managing director Rob Taylor says: Around 80% to 90% of what we do is bladed components of some sort for the turbo-machinery industry. We try and target that niche market where true five-axis machining is required. The addition of this large vertical turret lathe enhances the service we can offer our customers by allowing us to add turning operations both before and after five-axis milling.
